The Federal City Alumnae Chapter Signature Award Nominations

The Federal City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated seeks to recognize the outstanding contributions of individuals who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the African American community in social action, public service, leadership, arts, science, education, communication and health. The FCAC Awards program was launched in 1992. For many years the chapter hosted an annual Awards luncheon.  In more recent years the chapter has presented awards throughout the calendar year during our community and fundraising events.

As a member of the community, we invite you to submit a nomination for a desiring individual or organization for consideration of our signature awards.  The categories for consideration are below.

Signature Award Categories & Criteria

  • A person or organization may be nominated in more than one category.  However, each nomination must be submitted separately.
  • A person or organization may nominate themselves.
  • Please share why the nominee is deserving of the award.
  • Please provide as much information as possible.  Please include your information so that we can contact you for additional information.
  • Nomination are accepted year-round.

Barbara Jordan Social Action Award

Recognizes…Humanitarian service to solve pressing social problems (e.g. elected public office, mentoring, mobilizing voter participation or civic engagement campaigns, establishing a program to addresses a community need)

Dorothy I. Height          Public Service Award

Recognizes…Unpaid, hands-on volunteer service (e.g. working in shelters, food distribution, or with special needs populations, organizing community fairs, significant contributions to streamlining internal organization operations, significant fundraising)

Floretta McKenzie Education Award       

Recognizes…Outstanding contributions in public or charter education system (e.g. establishing managing tutorial/literacy programs, assisting with wrap-around services i.e. food/clothing/counseling; mentoring)

Austine Fowler Leadership Award

Recognizes…Skills in leadership must have made positive impact on the organization (e.g. serves/d as an officer or committee chair/co-chair, board member, founder, charter member of an organization)

Paula Giddings Arts Award

Recognizes…Artistic endeavors represent the African American culture and are locally or nationally recognized (e.g. publishing a book, writing articles, painting, photography, performing arts, etc.)

Frances Murphy Communications Award

Recognizes…Contributions in media (print, visual, radio, TV, newspaper, magazines, speech writer) that fosters an objective understanding and awareness of African American culture (e.g. promoting community service, mobilizing institutions and leaders, forging partnerships, spotlighting community service achievements)

Geraldine P. Woods Sciences Award

Recognizes…Outstanding achievement in physical and biological sciences to include engineering, technology and mathematics (e.g. development of STEM artifacts, implementing/leading science related programs, developing ways to support STEM learning experiences)

M. Jocelyn Elders Health Sciences Award

Recognizes…Outstanding service in health education and awareness (e.g. prevention of health conditions, diseases & risky behavior, promote awareness around physical, mental, emotional and social health education, address health disparities, significant contributions to internal operations, significant fundraising)

JC Hayward Media Award

Recognizes a person who uses their platform in (radio, television, digital or print) innovative ways. They reach a mass audience and produce great content involving the African American experience. This individual uses social media and the latest technology to speak and tell their story.
