Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully

In 1985, FCAC instituted the Del-Teen Program (later renamed Delta GEMS), which is designed to involve at-risk African American adolescent girls in the District of Columbia metropolitan area in meaningful activities, that will provide them with educational and cultural enrichment to benefit their personal growth and development.  The Delta GEMS program is a National Initiative of the Sorority.

The goals for Delta G.E.M.S. are:

  • To instill the need to excel academically;
  • To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;
  • To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures—high school and beyond; and
  • To create compassionate, caring, and community minded young women by actively involving them  in service learning and community service opportunities.

The Delta G.E.M.S. Program is targeted to adolescent girls aged 14-18 with a framework including five components: Scholarship, Sisterhood, Service, Show Me The Money, and Infinitely Complete. FCAC has chosen to initiate workshops in each of these topic areas, providing interactive lessons and activities with opportunities for self reflection and growth. Sisterhood, social, service, and educational events are planned for the participants.  Various members of the chapter serve as mentors throughout the year, helping to guide program participants through a variety of issues that may face the youth throughout the year.

The GEMS Program for 2011-2012 is currently underway.  For further details, please contact communityoutreach@thefcacdst.org
